To appreciate, understand, and be an artist, one does not
have to be born with a drawing pencil in one hand and a paint brush in the
other. After taking art courses, eagerly applying the methods and concepts
taught, Gary graduated from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1964 with
a double major, a B. S. in Art Education and Physical Education. Two years
later he was accepted in the graduate program at the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst, Massachusetts. The Art Department awarded him a
full, two year Teaching Assistant Scholarship. Gary chose to major in the
fine art of Ceramics and graduated with a Masters in Fine Art degree
(equivalent of a PhD in fine art) in 1969.
Gary was hired by Paterson State College in Wayne, New Jersey as a fifth
level Assistant Professor and began teaching in the fall of 1969. From the
start of his graduate work until he retired in 2002, Gary's ceramic,
watercolor, and drawing work has appeared in more than 90 art shows and
exhibits. He has had seven one-person shows and a one-person show of
watercolors at Harvard University.
His numerous juried shows are highlighted by the Annual New England
Exhibition at New Canaan, Connecticut, where his ceramic and watercolor work
won a number of awards, and prizes. Also, the Watercolor USA show at
Springfield, Missouri brought Gary many sales to private collections. These
shows and exhibitions have allowed Gary's work to be seen in the following
states: Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Missouri, Virginia, Arizona,
and Florida.
Two of Gary's watercolors toured in China as part of an Arts Exchange
Program in 2002. In 1994, the Taiwan Art Association invited Gary and his
wife, Judy, to demonstrate the potter's wheel and watercolor techniques, as
a Distinguished Guest Lecturer to Taichung, Taiwan.
In New Jersey, Gary's Art work was carried by many galleries and his work is
collected throughout the world.
Today, Gary and Judy live in New Berlin, Wisconsin and Gary is a resident
artist in the River's End Gallery.
