Gene
Gerbasi’s love for photography began as a very young boy and continued
throughout his career. Originally from Connecticut, he moved to the
Waukesha area after he completed his military service. He earned a degree
in commercial art from MATC and after several art jobs, landed in the art
department of the Milwaukee Journal as a designer and illustrator.
He
worked for 31 years as designer, illustrator and art director for its
Sunday Magazine section. He also worked in the features sections
designing pages for food and fashion and aiding in the selection of the
photos for the Kodak Photo Contest, which was sponsored locally by the
Milwaukee Journal. He culled thousands of entries each year, narrowing the
field of possible winners for a panel of other Journal photographers and
editors. The dozen or so winners were awarded prizes from the Journal for
various categories and many went on to become national award winners at
Kodak.
Gene
retired in 1995 and continues to pursue his love of photography as well as
to paint in his home studio in Waukesha. His romantic floral photography
series is a popular favorite of River’s End gallery guests.
