Artist Statement
Painting is the life force that propels me
through everyday tedium.
If I can create, all is well. Beauty, joy,
pain, and horror inspire me to transform my emotions to color and
composition…………..aspiring to evoke energy and emotional response in those
who view my work.
Recent developments that allow me to get past
the technical and thrive on the energy I wish to convey have made my desire
to paint even stronger. Less is more. Fewer strokes with greater control and
pure color allow the energy to flow.
My challenge is to maximize the force and mood
in my work, to convey to the viewer, all that the simplest of things in life
can provoke.
During the fellowship period I will focus on a
series called “Dirt”. This series will center on the bond between humans and
the organic matter. To show how our lives are shaped by their work with the
earth. Today’s world, filled with plastic this and artificial that, creates
a wall with the organic matter that fuels us. “Dirt” gives us life, and the
sterile, modern environment successful, civilized people pride themselves
with separates us from the significance of the land. Our roots are in dirt,
literally. Our future will not exist without it. It’s in our lives in ways
we may not notice and often take for granted. Our respect is often
non-existent. Our distain often glorified. My goal is to reunite the spirit
with the soil, to use my paintings as a vehicle showing how our lives are
touched by the soil under our feet. It shapes our lives, influences our
decisions and teaches us about us. In addition, during the fellowship
period, I will continue to share art with the community.
Through education and opportunity everyone can
come to value the unbreakable bond between art and our everyday lives.
Workshops for seniors and children together are scheduled to inspire the
creativity and sense of community in all of us.
I have chosen to apply under the Established
Artist category. The opportunities in the development of my art career have
been truly appreciated. Each accomplishment fuels my quest for chance to
bring art into my community, and, as important, the community into art.
The journey of learning to express emotion
through painting is so much more rewarding than I ever imagined. Sharing the
learning journey with others is ever more rewarding.
